Not everyone realises that New Zealand is preparing to build its first LNG import terminal in New Plymouth. This will mark the country’s entry into LNG infrastructure for the first time, representing a significant step in energy capability and resilience.
But is it going to happen? Where will they build it; 1) port Taranaki, 2) one of the offshore platforms planning to be decommissioned, or 3) further down the road towards Oaonui? Your guess is as good as mine.
Purpose: Act as "dry year" insurance to meet peak power demand and stabilize prices, allowing for over 95% renewable energy goals.
Capacity: Expected to import around of gas over winter periods.
Location: Planned for the North Island, specifically mentioned within the Taranaki region
Timeline: Shortlisted contractors in Feb 2026, aiming for a contract sign by mid-2026 for 2027–2028 operation.
Cost: Estimated at over NZ$1 billion, potentially funded via an industry levy of NZ$2-4/MWh.
Impact: Aims to save around million per year for the country in energy costs.
Status: As of March 2026, the project is still under evaluation to ensure the "business case stacks up" before final approval.
